Itanium Shines as Application Development Platform
As Executive Director of the Itanium Solutions Alliance I regularly field questions from customers and ISVs inquiring about the suitability of Itanium as an application development platform and the availability of applications on the platform. I would like to call your attention to a new whitepaper recently released by IDC. The paper addresses these very questions and talks directly about the broad range of development tools, libraries, drivers etc available on Itanium including the ability to easily create web-enabled applications on Itanium using Java or .Net, etc. The paper highlights recent data on platform growth and workloads and features the experiences of two global ISVs (Amdocs and Protegesoft) who have developed mission critical applications on the Itanium platform and provide testimony to the robustness of Itanium for application development work.
One interesting data point, according to IDC, is that application development workloads account for more than 11% of the overall Itanium-based server marketplace. Overall, the rapid increase in availability of Itanium-based apps over the past few years provides real world validation to the paper’s findings. In 2001, there were only about 1000 applications available and today there are over 13,000. If you are considering Itanium as a mission critical platform and/or are looking to do development on the platform, this is a must-read article.
