My story… and the future of telemedicine

Hello followers of innovative Itanium solutions,

Since winning the 2009 Itanium Innovation Award for Humanitarian Impact, many of you may have been wondering the genesis of the Kiwok BodyKom Series ECG solution. Humbly, I would like to share with you my story — the background of the solution we have today.

As I mentioned in our acceptance speech at the awards ceremony, there is tremendous potential for telemedicine to grow and provide better healthcare and to save substantial heathcare costs. For example, to examine all people in the western world at risk for heart problems with traditional methods would cost roughly $70 billion USD, compared to roughly $9 billion USD with intelligent, remote ECG monitoring like BodyKom Series ECG. Service of this magnitude would use about 15,000 Intel processors (CPU capacity demand).

The solution we developed for heart monitoring can easily be modified to monitor diabetes, blood pressure, or physical activity. Remote sensors can also be paired with more sophisticated equipment and used to detect infectious diseases. The number of people who could be helped by telemedicine in these areas is truly astounding. Watch for more information from Kiwok about expanding into other areas of medicine in the future.

Again, none of this would have been possible without all our great partners and the “zero latency enterprise framework” that HP Itanium-based servers can provide. Thank you to all.

Very best regards,

Anders

Not only the Founder, also a client…

Anders Björlin of Kiwok Accepting the Innovation Award and Demonstrating BodyKom Series ECG

Hello Itanium Users! I am Anders Björlin, one of the founders and the Business Architect at Kiwok Nordic AB. I’m also the heart patient that used his illness as the impetus to create this new business.

First, I wish to offer my sincere thanks to the panel of judges of the Itanium Solutions Alliance Innovation Awards to recognize the BodyKom Series™ ECG service as winner of the Humanitarian Impact category. For me personally, this is a victory, and also the most remarkable confirmation of what we have done so far to develop a remote ECG care service — a highly demanded new tool for improvement in health care.

Thirteen years ago I was diagnosed with heart problems, but today, I am convinced that none of the care activities or medications prescribed for me was needed. I believe my heart is working fine; to quote my doctor: “Anders, you have a fully normal cardiac arrhythmia in relation to your age”. But my personal events and experience have also given me the knowledge and energy to join the team of developers of BodyKom Series ECG service. I will soon publish my story of what happened more in detail.

My vision is to find and implement a new health care service for heart patients with the ability to give real time diagnosis information to support better decisions about medications and other treatments.

By using existing best of breed components on the market: Itanium-based HP Integrity NonStop servers, the Blaze Decision Support application from Fair Isaac, the Mobilis Wireless Independent Gateway from WIP, and services from CSC, I think we now have set a new, independent standard of intelligent communication that supports and benefits all different types of med/tech devices and applications. Read more about our partners here. We’re now getting past the old structure of multiple systems and workstations across hospitals to a new, smart, interactive digital world; where the patient’s information history and real time diagnosis information are displayed together on one screen. We know there is strong demand for this from healthcare service providers and from the large med/tech industry. We also know that, together with our partners, we we can achieve this.

We now know that we can promote improved health by using mobile remote care services, reduce the suffering of unhealthy and incorrect treatment, and promote cost reductions by early detection of health indicators. The hope is to make it possible to examine and test anyone, whoever they are, wherever they are, and whenever needed.

Furthermore, I’m happy to announce share with you the following Case Study produced by the Itanium Solutions Alliance about our BodyKom Series ECG service. Get the Case Study here. Please feel free to share with us your questions or comments.

Tack så mycket! (Thanks so much)
